ICAR-CCARI Goa Conducted a Training on Poultry Farming and Input Distribution to ST Farmers in Yellapur, Karnataka

    ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa conducted a training on “Scientific Management of Backyard Poultry” at Kodase village, Yellapur, Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka on 9 December 2025. The programme was organized under the Institute Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) with the objective of strengthening the livelihood opportunities of resource-poor farmers through improved backyard poultry husbandry. A total of 32 Scheduled Tribe farmers, including 30 women and 2 men, participated actively in the programme. During the technical sessions, Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu, Scientist (Animal Genetics and Breeding), explained suitable poultry varieties and their breeding management, disease management in poultry, preventive health care, and biosecurity measures for maintaining flock health to enhance farmers’ income. Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, SMS (Animal Science), guided the participants on the scientific care and management of chicks, growers, and layers, including appropriate housing arrangements and feeding management. As part of the input support, 550 nos. of Giriraja birds, and 2.5 tons of poultry layer feed were distributed to the beneficiaries to promote scientific rearing and improve productivity at the village level. The programme enhanced the knowledge and confidence of the participants, and the input distribution was expected to support the development of sustainable backyard poultry units while generating additional income for the beneficiary families. The programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu and Dr. Udharwar S. Vithalrao.
