Awareness programme on freshwater fish farming under SCSP at Karnataka

 

    A field visit and awareness programme was organized under the SCSP on 10 September 2025 at Tallur, Udupi coastal district, Karnataka for site selection and fish culture in a waterbody situated near the Tallur village. A total of five farmers participated in the programme along with the scientific team of ICAR-CCARI, expressing interest in adopting aquaculture practices. The farmers expressed their willingness to culture fish as a sustainable income source. The waterbody demonstrated its potential, suggesting it is suitable for aquaculture. However, it requires cleaning and proper preparation before culture activities can begin. Dr Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (Fisheries Resource Management), ICAR-CCARI, Goa provided the standard operating procedures for the freshwater pond culture and assured all the technical guidance for the activity. Dr. Akula Chinapolaiah, Senior Scientist (Spices, Plantation, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants), ICAR-CCARI, guided the farmers on the scientific cultivation of crops in the pond bunds. Dr Sreekanth, Dr Akula Chinapolaiah, and Shri Mrudul Pendurkar coordinated the programme.
