Field visit and interaction with the entrepreneurs of the AI enabled automated crab fattening unit in North Paravur, Thrissur, Kerala
A field visit and interaction were conducted on 3 April 2026 with a team of four young entrepreneurs (YaduSoman, Abdul Rahim, Gowthem Bose and Manas Mani) who have established an AI-enabled automated crab fattening unit at Chittatukara, North Paravur, Kerala, in response to their request for expert guidance and suggestions. Dr. Sreekanth G.B., Senior Scientist (FRM), ICAR-CCARI, interacted with the team and appreciated their innovative efforts in designing and implementing AI-based automation for water quality monitoring, feed management, and waste management in a crate-based crab fattening system. He also discussed important aspects such as seed collection and sourcing, cultivation of both hard-shelled and soft-shelled crabs, and the development of a novel crab fattening box and mould suited to their farming system. Shri.Yedhu, one of the entrepreneurs, shared their experiences in crab farming and sought continued guidance and cooperation. Dr. Sreekanth emphasized the need for sustainable practices, advising against overexploitation of seed resources from estuaries and recommending the release of a proportion of larger crabs back into natural water bodies to aid stock replenishment. The team expressed sincere gratitude to the Director and staff of ICAR-CCARI for their support and assured wholehearted cooperation in advancing fish farming initiatives.
