Workshop on Ecosystem service analysis in estuaries, coastal ecosystems and wetlands at State Wetland Authority, Kerala
A workshop on Ecosystem Service Analysis in Estuaries, Coastal Ecosystems, and Wetlands was organized on 17 April 2026 by the State Wetland Authority, Kerala (SWAK) under the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Kerala, in collaboration with ICAR–CCARI, Goa, where a framework for evaluating ecosystem services was presented to wetland managers, scientific officers, and students; during the session, Dr. Sreekanth G. B., Senior Scientist (Fisheries Resource Management) at ICAR–CCARI, delivered an insightful presentation highlighting the ecological and economic importance of estuaries and wetlands, fisheries resources, and ecosystem disservices such as invasive fish species, while also addressing key aspects such as ecosystem services, stakeholder participation, evaluation methods, and the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) approach; the workshop was attended by 21 participants (6 male and 15 female), who appreciated the knowledge gained and expressed their commitment to conserving coastal ecosystems, and Dr. John C. Mathew, Environmental Programme Manager at the Department of Environment and Climate Change and SWAK’s workshop coordinator, described the framework as a significant initiative that could be applied to Ramsar sites and other important estuaries and wetlands across Kerala, with the State Wetland Authority also assuring technical support for ICAR–CCARI’s research and development activities and encouraging similar initiatives in the future to enhance awareness and promote sustainable ecosystem management.
