ICAR CCARI launched ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2025’ Campaign #SHS2025
ICAR CCARI, Goa launched Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign with theme ‘Swachhotstav’ (स्वच्छोत्सव) on 17.09.2025 a Swachha Bharat Mission Initiative. All staff members of the CCARI taken Swachha Bharat pledge administered by Hon’ble Secretary of DARE and DG of ICAR, Dr. M. L. Jat ji to all the ICAR staff across country on inaugural day of this fortnight long cleanliness campaign. Institute has planned various activities for these 15 days’ campaign with ‘Mission Swacchata 365’ committee and staff members. The banners with SHS 2025 message with theme ‘Swachhotstav’ were displayed on each gate of the ICAR CCAR & KVK office. The messages are also displayed on the websites and social media pages of Institute on this occasion as social media campaign for awareness creation among the general public. A Swacchata run to promote cleanliness and fitness is also organised for staff. Also, as a part of #Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, a tree plantation drive with sixty-five cashew grafts is conducted in Farm ‘C’ of the Institute.

Transformation of Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) – Identification, Mapping & Clearance of Black Spots in/around Institute Campus
1. Identification & Mapping of Black Spots: surveyed different sections of the campus and adjoining areas. Potential black spots/areas prone to accumulation of waste were identified and mapped for focused action.
2. Clearance & Cleanliness Drive: Identified black spots were taken up for cleaning with active participation from staff and Contractual workers. Waste materials and unwanted vegetation were removed systematically, and awareness about prevention of recurrence was created among stakeholders.
3. Awareness & Sensitization: Staff members were sensitized about maintaining cleanliness and ensuring that such spots do not re-emerge in future. Emphasis was laid on proper segregation of waste, regular monitoring, and individual responsibility for sustaining cleanliness.
4. Outcome: All identified black spots within the premises were successfully cleared.

Engagement with School Children – Painting/Drawing Competition at Madkaikar Navchaitanya High School, Corlim
As part of the ongoing Swachhta Hi Seva 2025 campaign, ICAR CCARI organised a Painting and Drawing Competition on the theme of cleanliness and environmental awareness at Madkaikar Navchaitanya High School, Corlim under the support of Headmaster Shri Gurunath Naik. A total of 40 students (15 boys and 25 girls) enthusiastically participated, showcasing their creativity on topics such as waste management, hygiene, and conservation. The event helped raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness in daily life and motivated students to act as ambassadors of a cleaner and greener India. Best paintings were awarded with the prizes. The programme was coordinated by Shri Rahul Kulkarni (Asst. Chief Technical Officer) and Shri Payak Padkar (Technician), from ICAR CCARI.

ICAR – CCARI and ICAR- KVK, North Goa: Advocacy Activities – Swachhata Samvad
A Swachhata Samvad was organized by ICAR CCARI and KVK, North Goa during #SHS 2025 under theme ‘Swachhotsav’ on 20th September 2025. The event witnessed active participation from 45 individuals, including 11 male and 34 female participants. Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR - KVK, North Goa, addressed the gathering with a compelling talk on the significance of cleanliness. He emphasized the vital role of Swachhata (cleanliness) in ensuring a healthy and sustainable environment in our daily lives. Participants were sensitized about individual responsibilities in maintaining hygiene at home, workplace, and in public spaces. The session also highlighted the link between cleanliness, public health, and agricultural productivity. The interactive discussion encouraged community involvement and behavioral change towards a cleaner India.

Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir at CCARI under #SHS2025
A Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir (Preventive Health Check-Up Camp) for housekeeping and sanitation workers was organised at ICAR Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa Swacchata Hi Seva 2025 campaign. Dr. Juhi Kumari (MBBS), Authorized Medical Attendant of CCARI explained self-cleanliness and its importance. At health check-up camp, she examined all the Safai Mitra for blood pressure, blood sugar and body weight etc. The proper advice for improving the health condition was given to individuals based on their health parameters. Total 25 Safai Mitra benefited with this this health check-up camp.
Shri Vinod Ubarhande, Nodal Officer #SHS, coordinated the Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir and interacted with all housekeeping and sanitation workers of the institute and briefed about the purpose of said Health Check-Up Camp under the theme "Swachhotsav". Institute clinic is made accessible to all the contractual workers of the campus for health check-up with basic medicines at the ICAR CCARI, throughout year. Smt. Lizette Noronha and Shri Datta Velip assisted for the successful conduct of this programme.

Human Chain – Symbolic Event to Raise Awareness on Cleanliness under #SHS2025
A Human Chain – a symbolic event to raise awareness on Cleanliness and the “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” theme of Mission LiFE was organised at ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Goa as part of the ongoing Swachhta Hi Seva 2025 campaign on 22nd Sept. 2025. The event aimed to sensitise staff and general public about their collective responsibility towards maintaining cleanliness and promoting sustainable waste management practices.
The participants formed a human chain outside the institute campus, displaying placards and slogans related to cleanliness, waste reduction and recycling to emphasise the importance of individual and collective action for a cleaner and greener environment. This symbolic gesture reflected CCARI’s commitment to the objectives of Mission LiFE and its efforts to create public awareness, reinforcing that together we can achieve the goal of a clean nation.

Clean Green Utsav - Mega Cleanliness Drive under #SHS2025
A ‘Clean Green Utsav - Mega Cleanliness Drive’ was organised jointly by ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Goa and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) North Goa as part of the ongoing Swachhta Hi Seva 2025 campaign. The initiative aimed to create awareness among staff and the public on maintaining clean surroundings by conducting cleanliness drives at different locations.
Under the leadership of the ‘Mission Swacchata 365’ Committee, along with institute staff members, a cleanliness drive was carried out in the public area along the roadside wall of Farm A. Simultaneously, a team from KVK North Goa conducted a cleanliness drive at Karmali Railway Station in coordination with railway staff to spread the message of “Swachhotsav” and highlight the importance of collective responsibility for cleanliness in public spaces. A total of 40 staff members enthusiastically participated, collecting plastic bags, bottles and other waste materials and removing weeds around the campus compound and nearby railway station to improve the environment. The “Clean Green Utsav” demonstrated that active participation by all stakeholders can make public areas cleaner and greener.

Cleanliness Drive at Tourist and Religious Places under #SHS2025
ICAR - CCARI, Goa organised a cleanliness drive at tourist and religious places under the Swachhta Hi Seva 2025 campaign with ‘Swachhotsav’ theme on 24th September. The drive aimed to create awareness among visitors and the general public on the importance of keeping heritage and public spaces clean and litter-free. The cleanliness activity was conducted at the UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Old Goa Church premises, and at the Mahatma Gandhi Circle, locations that attract a large number of tourists and local residents. Institute staff participated in removing litter, plastic waste and transported the garbage from the surroundings.
Officials from CCARI shared messages on responsible tourism and sustainable waste management. This initiative not only improved the appearance of these prominent public spaces but also sensitised visitors about their shared responsibility in maintaining the sacredness and cleanliness of heritage and tourist sites.

Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath – Mass Shramdaan under #SHS2025
On 25 September 2025, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa organised “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath – Mass Shramdaan” at the institute’s residential colony area during Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign with Swachhotsav theme. This special drive aimed to encourage voluntary participation in keeping living spaces clean, healthy and pleasant for all residents. Staff members along with their family members enthusiastically took part in cleaning and maintenance activities across the residential colony. The collective effort included sweeping, removal of plastic waste, clearing of weeds and proper disposal of litter to enhance the cleanliness and hygiene of the area. The children park was also cleaned during this Shramdaan activity. This initiative not only improved the surroundings but also fostered a sense of shared responsibility and community spirit among residents. The voluntary participation of families demonstrated that united actions can lead to a cleaner, greener and more liveable environment for everyone.

1. Swachhata Samvad: conducted dialogues and discussions among 23 participants (farmers, agriculture Officers) of Pernem , Goa for promoting awareness regarding Swachhta and cleanliness initiatives.

Waste to Art at ICAR CCARI, Goa

1. The waste steel from old damaged swings has been modified and treated with an anti-rust primer and paint to create the entrance arch for the Bal Vatika in the residential quarters area.

2. Old steel gates have been modified and used for the drainage channel near ATDC to prevent waste and garbage from entering from outside.

3. Old waste G.I. pipes from drainage channel grills and old transparent sheets from salinity tanks have been repurposed to build a parking shed for the cars of staff residing in Type IV residential quarters.

4. Old, unused internet dishes have been modified and placed in the lawns near the Main Office Building, Mandovi Guest House, and AET Hut.

5. Old dismantled wooden window shutters from Type III residential quarters have been used to make luggage tables for guest houses and racks to store fertilizer off the floor.

6. Using all available waste materials, a small stool has been crafted for the carpenter to use during carpentry work when needed.

All the above waste materials have been repurposed as a form of art and contributed to the Swachhta Hi Sewa 2024 campaign.

Human Chain

Cleanliness is both the state of being clean and free from germs, dirt, trash, or waste, and the habit of achieving and maintaining that state.

Today, 32 staff including labourers joined their hands together near the Institute to raise the awareness in front of the public to demonstrate commitment to cleanliness and sanitation i.e  Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Under the campaign staff including contractual staff, housekeeping staff and laborers organized mega cleanliness drive at following places:

1.      Institute’s farm Office, laboratories and sections

2.      KVK North Goa campus

3.      Karmali railway station

Mega Cleanliness Drive

Sampoorna Swachhata through Shramdaan including Swachhata Lakhit Ekayi

Under the campaign regular staff, contractual staff, housekeeping staff and labourers organized cleanliness drive at following tourists/ religious/ spiritual spots:

1.      Area surrounding Basilica of Bom Jesus Church, Old Goa (World Heritage site of UNESCO)

2.      Area surrounding Se Cathedral Church, Old Goa (World Heritage site of UNESCO)

Participants-: 28

The focus was to clean the targeted areas where plastic bags and other wastes were identified previously. Under the campaign regular staff, contractual staff and labourers organized cleanliness drive to clear waste accumulated behind the institute pig and fish units and removed polythene bags that were blocking the drainage channels of the institute.

Participants-: 15

A cultural fest was organized at KVK North Goa to promote the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ and raise awareness about cleanliness. College and school students, alongside officials, used folk songs, arts, and speeches to engage the public. Fifty-six participants from two institutions - National Skill Training Institute, Farmagudi, and RNM Government Higher Secondary School, Bino Vasco - actively participated. The event emphasized the harmful effects of polythene bags and urged citizens to view cleanliness as both a civic duty and moral responsibility.

A Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir (Preventive Health Check-Up Camp) for housekeeping and sanitation workers was organised. Dr. Namrata Gauns Naik (MBBS), Authorized Medical Attendant of CCARI explained self-cleanliness and its importance in detail. At health check-up camp, Dr. Namrata examined all the Safai Mitra for blood pressure, blood sugar and body weight. The proper advice for improving the health condition was given to individuals based on their health parameters. Total 25 Safai Mitra participated in this this health check-up camp.

Interactive Session on Access to Health Facilities and Services for Safai Mitras #SHS2024

       An interactive session on access to Health Facilities and Services for Safai Mitras under #SHS2024 campaign was organised at ICAR CCARI on 27th September 2024. Shri Vinod Ubarhande (Farm Superintendent) coordinated the session and briefed all Safai Mitras about various health facilities including Institute clinic, ESI hospitals, GMC for availing the various treatment and medicine benefits. He emphasised on availing ESI hospital benefits as all are covered under health insurance for all kind of treatment and medicines.

      Dr. Namrata Naik Gauns (MBBS) urged all Safai Mitras to visit Institute clinic for health related issues and get the health parameter tested periodically. Shri Uday Giri, Supervisor from the Job Contractor, also extended all the assistance in case of availing ESI hospital facility for oneself or for dependents. Smt. Madina Sollapuri (ACTO) and Shri Datta Velip (Sr. Technician) assisted for conducting the programme. Total 35 Safai Mitras including housekeeping staff, sanitation and farm maintenance workers participated in this session and interacted with officials to get their doubts cleared.

Distribution of Safety gear to Safai Mitras at ICAR-CCARI under #SHS 2024

      To safeguard the sanitation and filed workers from occupational hazards, ICAR -CCARI provided various safety gears to sanitation and farm workers who are engaged in housekeeping, and various field works. This programme is conducted as a part of ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign. The safety gears like rubber gloves, masks, gum boots, the climbing equipment with safety cables for coconut climber, goggles for the brush cutting operator etc. distributed during this programme. All Safai Mitras are advised to use these items during their work for their safety. Information on available fire extinguisher in campus is also given to all participants..  Total 25 people including staff members participated in the programme.

          During the event, awareness was raised along with Mayem village panchayat public representative regarding various subsidy schemes for impoverished rural households, including initiatives for toilet construction, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana aimed at providing housing in urban areas, the Saubhagya scheme under PM Sahaj Bijili Har Ghar Yojana which ensures electrification for all willing households in urban as well as rural areas, and the PM Ujjawala Yojana that facilitates access to clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, for rural and excluded households, substituted traditional fuels like firewood. Ayushman Bharat health account facilitates seamless healthcare; Swachhta Udyami Yojana offers financial support for the procurement and operation of sanitation-related vehicles in public-private partnerships; PM Jan Dhan Yojana ensures access to financial services through banks; Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide 100% safe and adequate drinking water via individual household tap connections. Thirty participants attended this event, including a public representative from Mayem Village Panchayat.

Under Swatchata Pakhwada program, Shri Dattaram S Shetkar Headmaster Old Goa Education Institution was invited as Chief Guest for ' Activities from Waste to Wealth. Shri Rahul Kulkarni ACTO briefed the chief guest  on activities for Swatchatta conducted by the institute in past 15 days which were started from 17 th Sept 2024 & will continue upto 2 nd Oct 2024. Shri Vinod Ubarhande Farm Suprintendent & Nodal officer of Swatchatta Pakhwada explained the importance of Cleanliness also the theme for this year 'mind cleanliness'. Shri Sidharth Marathe ACTO proposed vote of thanks.

Waste to Wealth Workshop for Awareness on Organic Farming #SHS2024

         ICAR–CCARI, Goa, on 1^st October, 2024, conducted a workshop on waste to wealth, demonstrating the management of biomass by recycling to create wealth through vermicomposting. A total of 115 participants, including 85 students of Sacred Heart High School, Verla, Bardez, Goa, 20 Safai Mitras from housekeeping and farm, and 10 staff members of CCARI and school teachers, attended the workshop. A complete demonstration on utilizing various biomass, including crop residues, plant leaves and branches, coconut fronds and shells, was showcased step-by-step to all participants for making vermicompost, an important component of organic farming. The importance of the "Reduce, Recycle and Reuse" principle was emphasized for a sustainable ecosystem.

The ‘Biomass Recycling Unit’ of the Institute, along with its facilities, including a biomass shredder machine, vermicompost beds, and vermicompost sieving machine, were shown with a complete explanation of making vermicompost with identified species of earthworms. The workshop was organized and coordinated by Shri Vinod Ubarhande (Farm Superintendent), Shri Datta Velip (Sr. Technician), Shri Laxman Naik (Sr. Technician), and Shri Omkar Sawant (Young Professional-I) as part of the Swacchata Hi Sewa 2024 campaign.

Felicitation of Safai Mitras on Occasion of Swachha Bharat Diwas #SHS2024

All housekeeping and sanitation workers of the Institute were felicitated by Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director of ICAR CCARI Goa, on the occasion of Swachha Bharat Diwas #SHS2024, being celebrated across the country on 2^nd October 2024. This felicitation aimed to express gratitude and motivate all sanitation workers for their invaluable contribution to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene, ensuring the good health of all staff members. Dr. Parveen Kumar congratulated the entire ‘Mission Swachhata 365’ team for successfully conducting the #SHS2024 campaign.

Shri Vinod Ubarhande, the Nodal Officer of the 'Swachhata Hi Seva 2024' campaign, briefed the gathering about various activities undertaken over the past two weeks. These included cleanliness drives at the Institute, surrounding public and tourist places, villages, and schools, as well as the cleaning of CTUs as part of the #SHS2024 initiative. A total of 25 people, including sanitation workers and office staff, were present during the program. The program was coordinated by Shri Vinod Ubarhande, Smt. Madina Sollapuri, Smt. Pranjali Wadekar, and Shri Datta Velip.

The Swachhta pledge was administered to all the officials/staff members of this institute.

As part of Swachhta Special Campaign 4.0, focused on cleanliness and reducing pendency in government offices, cleaning activities were carried out in the balcony area of the main office building of the Institute under the guidance of Smt. Madina S. Sollapuri (ACTO, Civil Engg.). The Horticulture, Animal Science and Fisheries sections were cleaned by removing waste materials, furniture and scrap. A tidy office environment not only looks better but also promotes health by reducing dust and other impurities, which can cause allergies and fire hazards. All scrap materials were safely disposed off.

As part of Swachhta Special Campaign 4.0, focused on cleanliness and reducing pendency in government offices, cleaning of Crop Science Field Lab was done.

209 kgs of scrap identification has been done and the same will be disposed off on 16-10-2024 (scheduled in the implementation phase of the Special Campaign) according to prescribed rules and regulations.

As part of Swachhta Special Campaign 4.0, focused on cleanliness and reducing pendency in government offices, weeding activity was conducted at the institute in which 5 physical files have been weeded out.

1. 16-12-2024

Swachhta Awareness Day – Converting Waste to Wealth activity was conducted near Vermicompost Unit of ICAR – CCARI, Goa. The activity began with giving insights of various methods of wealth to waste, i.e recycling waste materials like paper, glass, plastic and metal can be recycled to create new products.

 Waste to Energy: Also, how Organic waste and biomass also can be converted into energy through processes like anaerobic digestion example Biogas/ Gobar gas plant. 

Composting: Organic waste like food scraps/kitchen waste, biomass, farm waste can be used to make organic manure which is essential for Soil example Vermicompost.

Cleanliness Maintenance: Cleanliness drive was was conducted to Office premises, library and corridors.

E-Office Implementation/ Digitization of Office records and Cleaning and Disposal of Scrap Items/Equipments.

Under Swachhata Pakhwada 2024, Two Campaigns were Organised viz. Awareness of Water Harvesting for Agriculture/Horticulture  crops and Demonstration on Kitchen gardens at ICAR CCARI, Old Goa.

Application and Benefits of water Harvesting Technology with actual site visit was discussed in detail with the group of 20 farmers from Masure village of Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra.

Demonstration visit of Kitchen Gardening/Home Gardening at IFS field was arranged with detailed discussion on raising own vegetables with organic input for health and sustainability. Group of 30 students and 2 Staff members from Holy Cross High School Quepem South Goa participated in this program

Under Swachhta Pakhwada 2024, Shramdaan activity was conducted within the surrounding areas including the Residential Quarters at ICAR – CCARI, Goa.

Under Swachhta Pakhwada, activity was done in Mopa village at Pernem where the Shri Rahul Kulkarni, ACTO delivered lecture along with demonstration of Usage of Cloth bags while buying vegetables or any other items.

Stop the usage and burning of single use plastics as it causes pollution to the environment and emitting different types of harmful gases

Also emphasising to maintain cleanliness in their residents as well as surrounding areas.

On the occasion of Kisan Diwas, the KVK, North Goa organized a program to promote cleanliness in agriculture. The event included interactive workshops on practical solutions for maintaining Swachhata in farming, such as waste management and sustainable practices.

Farmers and civil society officials shared their experiences with Swachhata initiatives, showcasing innovative approaches to cleanliness and sustainability. Outstanding contributors were felicitated with certificates and mementos to honor their efforts.

The event successfully raised awareness about the importance of cleanliness in agriculture and encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable practices.

Under Swachhata Pakhwada 2024 Swachhata thematic drawing competition for school children at Old Goa Education Institute, Old Goa was conducted.

Total 22 students from class 5 to class 10 were participated in competition. Shri. Rahul Kulkarni (ACTO) and Sri. Ashish Pitre (Sr Technical Assistant) briefed about the purpose of said program. 

Shri Dattaram Shet (Headmaster) also briefed in short about the importance of cleanliness at school, home and surroundings. He urged all students to follow the good practices of sanitation and hygiene and also to avoid use of plastic.

The prizes were awarded for best 3 drawings and 3 consolation prizes were also distributed.

Under Swachhta Pakwada 2024 cleanliness drive was carried out in the Karmali village on 25-12-2024, a non adopted village.

Recycling the waste water: -

ICAR- CCARI Old Goa conducted campaign on "Recycling the waste water" under Swachhata Pakhwada on 26.12.2024. Total 50 students from Agriculture College, Navsari participated in campaign. Dr. Sujeet Desai, Scientist and Shri Vinod Ubarhande, ACTO (Farm Supdt.) briefed about the purpose of said program. They also explained in short about the importance of cleaning of sewage and water harvesting for agriculture, horticulture and kitchen gardens.

They also explained, on-site "Eco-friendly Wastewater Treatment Facility" in which the waste from livestock is collected first and it gets treated in kidney shaped treatment cell. The treated waste water is utilized for fodder and crop irrigation purposes.

Shri Ashish Pitre (Sr Technical Assistant) and Shri Omkar Sawant (YP) also assisted in conducting said the program.

Shramadan on roadside to clean up surroundings

"Shramadan" at public places and nearby roads of Institute campus, under Swachhata Pakhwada, was conducted by ICAR CCARI today on 27th December 2024. All staff members of the Farm Section of the Institute and labourers participated in this activity.

The cleaning work including disposal of  biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, weeding, sweeping etc. were carried out on nearby roads, surrounding campus wall, Old Goa petrol pump and national highway area.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) conducted activity to promote clean and green technologies and organic farming practices in Kitchen Garden for people at Karmali village.

As part of Swachhta Pakhwada 2024 on 29-12-2024, also organized a special drive on walkathons where in rally was organized from ICAR - CCARI Campus to   Old Goa and back to the Institute Campus. All the permanent and contractual staff participated in the rally.
