Training-cum-Poultry Birds Distribution Programme at Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu under SCSP

    ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa conducted a one-day training-cum-poultry birds and feed distribution programme on “Scientific Poultry Farming” at Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu on 27 February 2026, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ramanathapuram under SCSP. During the technical sessions, Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), explained the scientific care and management of grower and layer poultry birds, including appropriate housing systems, balanced feeding practices, health care management, biosecurity measures, and effective marketing strategies for improving farm profitability. Dr. S. Vallal Kannan, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Ramanathapuram, highlighted the role of backyard poultry farming in Tamil Nadu and discussed suitable poultry varieties for local conditions along with their management practices to ensure sustainable income for small and marginal farmers. Further, Dr. Sreekanth G. B., Senior Scientist (FRM), elaborated on ICAR–CCARI’s contribution under the SCSP for coastal livelihood development and explored the possibilities of integrating ICAR technologies related to fish farming to generate additional income opportunities for the participating farmers.A total of 31 Scheduled Caste women farmers from Ramanathapuram district actively participated in the training programme. As part of the input support under the programme, 580 Giriraja poultry birds and one ton of grower feed were distributed to the beneficiaries to promote scientific rearing practices and enhance productivity at the village level. The programme successfully strengthened the knowledge and confidence of the participating women farmers towards adopting improved poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood option.The programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Dr. Sreekanth G. B in association with the scientists of KVK–Ramanathapuram.
