
Importance of Organic Nutrient Sources in Sustainable Agriculture
ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, and ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, organised an awareness programme on the use of organic sources at Mayem in Bicholim taluka and Keri in Valpoi taluka of North Goa on 21.04.2026.The programme was held under the National Awareness Campaign on Soil Health Management and balanced use of fertilizers, with the objective of promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving farmers’ understanding of organic inputs.Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK, North Goa highlighted the significance of organic sources such as enriched farmyard manure, fermented liquid organic manures, composting techniques and biofertilizers. He emphasised the importance of organics sources in enhancing soil structure, improving water-holding capacity and increasing nutrient use efficiency, while fostering beneficial microbial activity and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers.
Dr. S.V. Udharwar, SMS (Animal Science), elaborated on the use of cow dung and urine in organic farming. He explained the preparation and benefits of traditional formulations such as Jeevamrut, Beejamrut and Panchagavya, which contribute to improved plant growth and soil fertility.Dr. K.R. Nivya, SMS (Floriculture and Landscaping), emphasised the importance of different intercropping system for enriching soil health, organic vegetable production, mulching practices in conserving soil moisture etc. Farmers were encouraged to adopt integrated organic farming practices using locally available resources to minimise input costs and ensure long-term sustainability.
The programme was conducted in association with the Department of Agriculture, ATMA North Goa, Goa Dairy and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services. A total of 34 farmers, including 29 men and five women, participated in the programme.The programme was coordinated by Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Udharwar and Dr Nivya, K.R.
