Training on Boosting Fertility in Dairy Cattle through Nutri-Hormonal Therapy for Repeat Breeding

ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, organized a training program on “Reproductive Management in Repeat Breeding Cows through Nutri-Hormonal Therapy” at Chandel, Pedne on 20th August 2025 in collaboration with Shri Sateri Dudh Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Maryadith, handel Hassapur.

The objective of the training was to create awareness and build capacity among farmers to address the challenge of repeat breeding in crossbred dairy cattle. The program focused on the demonstration and adoption of Nutri-Hormonal therapy as a practical solution to enhance conception rates, minimize calving intervals, and reduce economic losses in dairy farming.

Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, welcomed the gathering, interacted with dairy farmers, and encouraged them to adopt scientific feeding practices to prevent reproductive disorders. He stressed that proper nutrition and balanced rations play a key role in managing energy balance achieving higher fertility and milk yield.

Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, SMS (Animal Science), elaborated on the common causes of repeat breeding and emphasized the role of bypass fat supplementation, progesterone hormone therapy, and nutritional correction in improving fertility. He also guided farmers on identification of repeat breeders, importance of body condition scoring, timely artificial insemination, and management of hormonal imbalances for better reproductive efficiency.

Mrs. Nivya K.R. motivated farmers by highlighting flower cultivation as a subsidiary enterprise that can be integrated with dairy farming to ensure additional income and risk diversification.

The program witnessed the active participation of 14 progressive dairy farmers (11 men and 3 women). As part of the practical session, Dr. Udharwar S.V. conducted per rectal examination in 11 crossbred cows across three dairy farms, which helped farmers gain hands-on knowledge.

The training was successfully coordinated by Dr. Udharwar S.V., Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Mr. Rahul Kulkarni, and Mrs. Nivya K.R. Farmers expressed appreciation for the initiative and showed keen interest in applying Nutri-Hormonal therapy in their herds for improving reproductive performance.
