Awareness programme on invasive fish species management at KVK South Goa

    An awareness programme on invasive fish species management was conducted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Goa on 15 May 2026 under a research project funded by the Goa State Research Foundation. The programme aimed to enhance awareness among students regarding the ecological impacts of invasive fish species and the strategies required for their effective management in the wetlands of Goa. During the programme, Dr Sreekanth G.B. Senior Scientist (FRM) delivered a lecture on the occurrence and management of invasive fish species in the wetlands of Goa. The speaker elaborated on the ecological threats posed by invasive species and discussed various management measures for their control and mitigation. It was also highlighted that ICAR-CCARI, in collaboration with the Goa State Research Foundation, is currently implementing a research project focused on the management of invasive fish species in Goa. Further, Dr Hrishikesh Pawar emphasized the ecological importance of indigenous fish species in maintaining aquatic ecosystem balance and stressed the need for their conservation. The adverse effects of invasive fish species on native fish diversity and aquatic ecosystems were also discussed in detail. A total of 21 (18 Female, 3 male) representing various colleges from South Goa participated in the programme. The participants expressed appreciation for the initiative and assured their active cooperation in future research and field-level activities related to the management of invasive fish species in Goa.
