Training cum distribution programme onquality planting material production and scientific nursery management in Horticultural Crops at Kumta, Karnataka under SCSP
ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Goa,
organized a Training-cum-Distribution Programme on “Quality Planting
Material Production and Scientific Nursery Management in
Horticultural Crops” at Machgona village, Kumta Taluka, Uttara
Kannada district, Karnataka, on 18 March 2026 under SCSP, with the
objective of enhancing the livelihood opportunities of resource-poor
farmers through the adoption of improved production technologies and
scientific practices for producing quality planting materials. A
total of 20 Scheduled Caste farmers (18 male and 2 female)
participated in the programme. Dr. Manohara KK, Senior Scientist
(Genetics and Plant Breeding), highlighted the SCSP programme and
its role in ensuring sustainable livelihoods for farmers and
delivered a lecture on the production of quality planting materials
in horticultural crops, elaborating on various techniques of
planting material production, scientific nursery management, and the
management of important pests and diseases. During the programme,
improved varieties of arecanut seedlings (Mangala, Mohitnagar, and
Goa Local) were distributed to the participating farmers along with
fertilizers, crates, and grass cutters. Dr. Sreekanth GB, Senior
Scientist (Fisheries) and SCSP Coordinator, also addressed the
gathering, apprising farmers of the SCSP scheme and various
fisheries-related activities that could support their livelihoods,
while emphasizing the importance of collective efforts and
encouraging farmers to work in groups to maximize benefits from
available resources. Shri Ganapathi M Mukri and Shri Nagappa M Mukri,
farmers from the region, played a key role in organizing the
programme by mobilizing participants and facilitating its successful
conduct in the village.
