Field Visit and Interaction with farmers and fishermen on Aqua-Eco-Tourism in Kodungallur-Azhikode Estuary, Kerala

A scientific team comprising experts from ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI), Goa, and ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Kochi, conducted a field visit to the Kodungallur-Azhikode estuary, Kerala on 19 September 2025. A total of five fish farmers were also present during the field trip lead by Shri, Yeju K, a progressive fish farmer from Kodungallur. The visit focused on understanding the potential and challenges of aqua-eco-tourism in the region and facilitating stakeholder interaction. The team included Dr. Solomon Rajkumar and Dr. Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientists from ICAR-CCARI, and Dr. Ashalatha, Principal Scientist from ICAR-CIFT. During the visit, the scientists engaged with local farmers and fishermen, discussing various aspects of estuarine resource utilization, sustainable aquaculture practices, and eco-tourism prospects. The interaction with fishermen of the Munambam harbour provided valuable insights into the socio-economic conditions of the stakeholders, their traditional knowledge systems, and the ecological significance of the estuary. Discussions also highlighted the opportunities for integrating aquaculture with eco-tourism to promote sustainable livelihoods while conserving the fragile estuarine ecosystem. The visit was part of a broader initiative to promote community-based sustainable development in coastal and estuarine areas, combining scientific research with local participation.
