Awareness Programme on Invasive Fish Species Management in Goa
ICAR-CCARI, Goa, in collaboration with the Division of Fisheries Resource Harvesting, Post-Harvest Management and Extension (FRHPHM), ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai, organized an awareness programme on “Invasive Fish Species Management in Goa” on 8 October 2026 under the Goa State Research Foundation (GSRF)-funded IRIS-LD research project. The programme was attended by 17 participants (9 female, 8 male, incl. students and one faculty). Dr. Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CCARI, delivered a technical presentation on the occurrence, introduction pathways, ecological consequences and management of invasive fish species. He highlighted their potential impacts on native fish diversity, trophic interactions and aquatic ecosystem functioning, emphasizing early detection, public awareness and stakeholder participation as essential components of effective management. A hands-on demonstration featuring live specimens of Pangasionodon hypophthalmus, Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus, alongside selected ornamental and indigenous freshwater fishes, familiarized participants with species identification and distinguishing morphological characteristics. The session also highlighted the need for studies by researchers on systematic surveys of native and non-native fishes, ecological impact assessments, ecosystem modelling to predict invasion scenarios, and the development of value-added products from invasive fish biomass, wherever ecologically and legally appropriate. Dr. Nimit Kumar Joshi, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFE, appreciated the initiative and assured technical guidance for collaborative research on invasive species management and indigenous fish conservation. The programme strengthened scientific awareness of biological invasions and encouraged research-oriented approaches to biodiversity conservation, risk assessment and sustainable utilization. It was coordinated by Dr. Sreekanth, Dr. Nimit, Shri Trivesh Mayekar, Scientist (FGB), Mr. Mrudul Pendurkar and Mr. Aron Vales, YP-I, ICAR-CCARI.
