Scientific goat management fosters entrepreneurship

 

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, and ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, successfully organized a five-day training program on Scientific Management of Goats for rural youths at the Sal Training Hall from August 21st to 25th, 2025.

Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa, inaugurated the program as the chief guest. In his remarks, he highlighted the importance of goat farming in boosting Goa's agricultural economy and improving farmers' livelihoods. Dr. Kumar also discussed the need to incorporate climate-resilient goat breeds, such as the Konkan Kanyal, Black Bengal, and Malabari, into the state's farming systems. He emphasized the adaptability, resistance to local diseases, and efficient feed utilization of these breeds, making them suitable for diverse local conditions.

Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head of the KVK, welcomed the gathering and urged farmers to make the best use of the KVK’s expertise to improve their farming enterprises. He emphasised the importance of fodder production and conservation techniques to combat the challenges posed by seasonal fluctuations in the availability of good-quality feed.

Extension Officers from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Government of Goa, also shared details of various livestock development schemes available to farmers. Dr. Udharwar S.V., SMS (Animal Science), delivered technical lectures on region-specific goat breeds, routine management practices, fodder integration, and perennial fodder tree cultivation. He also conducted practical sessions on castration, tagging, microchip application, primary veterinary aid, and weighing.

Mrs. Madina Solapure spoke on goat housing design and management. Dr. Susitha Rajkumar elaborated on major goat diseases, vaccination schedules, and deworming practices, and guided participants in hands-on health management techniques. Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu explained breeding management, Dr. Nibedita Naik discussed scientific feeding practices, and Mrs. Nivya K.R. delivered a lecture on integrating fodder crops under plantation, while Mr. Rahul Kumar addressed goat manure recycling and value addition.

As part of their experiential learning, participants visited the Konkan Kanyal goat farms at Goa Velha, Kundaim, and Farmagudi, as well as the Black Bengal Goat Farm at Karmali, where they gained practical exposure to scientific goat rearing and fodder production techniques.

The training programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from rural youth and farmers, with a total of 17 participants (15 men and 2 women) from across Goa. Participants expressed their appreciation for the scientific guidance, practical demonstrations, and exposure visits facilitated by the experts.  Farmer–Scientist Interaction session, participants shared their feedback during the valedictory function.  Dr. Parveen Kumar presided the valedictory session and distributed certificates to participants. The programme ended with Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu proposing the vote of thanks. Dr. Udharwar S.V., Dr. N. Bommayasamy, and Dr. Susitha Rajkumar served as Course Directors.
