Field day on Nutri-hormonal therapy for managing repeat breeding in dairy cows organized by ICAR-KVK, North Goa and ICAR-CCARI, Goa
ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, and ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, conducted a field day on Nutri-hormonal therapy for improving conception and pregnancy rates in repeat breeding crossbred dairy cows at Cumbharjua village, Tiswadi taluka, North Goa, on April 29, 2026. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Village Panchayat, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Department of Agriculture, and ATMA North Goa. Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK North Goa, highlighted that repeat breeding is a major field-level constraint affecting dairy productivity. He emphasised the need for effective adoption of nutri-hormonal therapy to address such reproductive issues. He also briefed participants on various farmer-centric activities undertaken by ICAR–KVK, CCARI, North Goa for promoting sustainable livelihoods, and stressed the importance of green fodder production and balanced feeding to mitigate reproductive problems. Dr. Gokuldas P.P., Senior Scientist (Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics), elaborated on the treatment protocol and its scientific basis. He outlined the major causes of repeat breeding in cattle and highlighted appropriate diagnostic, health, and reproductive management strategies. He emphasised the importance of proper postpartum care, timely treatment of reproductive disorders such as retained placenta and metritis, accurate heat detection, and optimum timing of artificial insemination, along with appropriate hormonal and therapeutic interventions. He further stated that repeat breeding can be effectively managed through a combination of balanced nutrition, timely breeding, proper health care, and scientific interventions, thereby improving fertility, enhancing milk production, increasing farm income, and ensuring sustainability in dairy farming. Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), sensitised farmers on the nutri-hormonal therapy technology developed by ICAR–CCARI, which improves conception rates by correcting nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances, thereby enhancing reproductive efficiency in crossbred cows. He also demonstrated its practical application at the dairy farm of Shri Dhaku Khumbarjuvekar. Shri Dhaku Khumbarjuvekar, a progressive dairy farmer, shared his experience of successfully treating a repeat breeding cow by supplementing bypass fat for 45 days, along with hormonal therapy administered on the 7th day post-artificial insemination, which resulted in successful conception. A total of 24 farmers (5 male and 19 female) participated in the programme, including Shri Vishwas Sukhtankar, Chairman of the Dairy Cooperative, along with officials from line departments. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Dr. Gokuldas P.P., Dr. N. Bommayasamy, and Ms. Vedika Kudalkar.
