ICAR-CCARI Goaconducts training on “Biochar Production and Carbon Credit Opportunities in Plantation System”
ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Goa organised aone-day training programme on “Biochar Production and Carbon Credit Opportunities in Plantation System” at ICAR-KVK, North Goaon 24 March 2026. The training programme was conducted under the project titled “Potential of plantation based systems in generating carbon credit through biochar production in the west coast region of India” funded by MoA&FW-RKVY. The primary objective of this training was to create awareness about the potential of a plantation-based systems (Kulagar) in generating carbon credits through biochar production in the west coast region of India. The valedictory session was graced by Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa. In his address, he highlighted the importance of biochar in Goan agriculture, particularly its role in improving soil healthand enhancing plant growth. He also encouraged farmers to explore opportunities in carbon credit generation through biochar production in arecanut and coconut-basedplantation systems. The programme commenced with an introductory session that outlined the objectives and significance of biochar production using low-cost technologies, emphasizing sustainable agriculture, carbon sequestration, and carbon credit opportunities, along with practical field-level applications. This was followed by technical sessions covering biochar production methods, best practices, and operational aspects, along with a live demonstration using a portable biochar unit. The programme also addressed the role of biochar in improving soil properties and crop productivity, providing participants with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in biochar production using Kontaki kiln for its effective adoption. Around 50 farmers primarily fromQueri and Priol villages, Ponda Taluka,Goa actively participatedin the training programme. Thefarmers appreciated the initiative and expressed keen interest in adopting scientific approaches to biochar production within plantation-based systems. The programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. Uthappa A. R., Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Dr. Sujeet Desai, and Dr. Gopal Mahajan.
