ICAR-CCARI Goa Conducted Training on Poultry Farming for SC Farmers of Karnataka
ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa conducted a Capacity Building Programme on “Scientific Management of Backyard Poultry” at Thaggarse village, Byndoor, Udupi district, Karnataka on 28 November 2025. The programme was organized under the Institute Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) with the objective of strengthening the livelihood opportunities of resource-poor farmers through improved backyard poultry husbandry. A total of 30 Scheduled Caste farmers, including 28 women and 2 men, participated actively in the programme. During the technical sessions, Dr. Shirish Narnaware, Senior Scientist (Veterinary Pathology), delivered an insightful lecture on disease management in poultry, highlighting early diagnosis, preventive health care, and vital biosecurity measures for maintaining flock health. Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu, Scientist (Animal Genetics and Breeding), explained hatchery operations, brooding management, and marketing strategies for eggs and poultry birds to enhance farmers’ income. Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, SMS (Animal Science), guided the participants on the scientific care and management of chicks, growers, and layers, including appropriate housing arrangements and feeding management. As part of the input support, 625 nos. of Giriraja birds, 2.5 tons of layer feed, and veterinary medicinal supplements useful for both poultry and dairy animals were distributed to the beneficiaries to promote scientific rearing and improve productivity at the village level. The programme enhanced the knowledge and confidence of the participants, and the input distribution was expected to support the development of sustainable backyard poultry units while generating additional income for the beneficiary families. The programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu, Dr. Udharwar S. Vithalrao, and Dr. Shirish Narnaware.
