ICAR-CCARI Goa Conducted Training on Scientific Backyard Poultry
Farming and Input Distribution to SC Farmers at Yellapur, Uttar
Kannada, Karnataka
ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI),
Goa organized a training programme on ‘Scientific Management of
Backyard Poultry’ at Jambesal village, Yellapur taluka, Uttar
Kannada district of Karnataka on 05 February 2026. The programme
was conducted under the Institute Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP)
with the objective of enhancing livelihood opportunities of
resource-poor households through adoption of improved and
scientific backyard poultry farming practices. The programme was
implemented in collaboration with ICAR-KVK, Uttar Kannada,
Karnataka and Subramannia Gaonkar, Baginakatte Sridevi Farmer
Producer Organisation.A total of 40 Scheduled Caste farmers,
comprising 34 women and 06 men, participated actively in the
training programme.
During the technical sessions, Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar
Vithalrao, SMS (Animal Science), delivered hands-on training on
scientific management of chicks, growers, and layers, with
emphasis on proper housing systems, balanced feeding, brooding
management, and cost-effective management practices suitable for
backyard conditions. He also highlighted the importance of
record keeping and biosecurity measures to improve productivity
and profitability.Dr. Shirish Narnaware, Senior Scientist
(Veterinary Pathology) provided valuable insights on health care
management, including common poultry diseases, vaccination
schedules, deworming, and hygienic practices aimed at reducing
mortality and improving survivability of birds.Dr. Amiya Ranjan
Sahu, Scientist (Animal Genetics and Breeding) elaborated on
hatchery operations, selection of quality chicks, brooding
techniques, and efficient marketing strategies for eggs and
poultry birds, with special focus on income enhancement and
sustainable enterprise development for small and marginal
farmers.
As part of the programme’s input support initiative, a total
of 625 Giriraja poultry birds and one ton of poultry feed were
distributed to 40 beneficiary farmers to facilitate adoption of
scientific backyard poultry farming and strengthen poultry-based
livelihood systems at the village level.The programme concluded
with an interactive discussion session, during which farmers
shared their experiences and clarified doubts related to poultry
management. The training programme was coordinated by Dr.
Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Dr. Shirish Narnaware, Dr. Amiya
Ranjan Sahu and Dr. Rangnath G.
