Workshop on Ecosystem services and fisheries of WetlandsOn the occasion of World Wetlands Day at Govt. High School Pissurlem, Sattari, Goa

 

    On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, a one-day workshop on “Wetlands, fisheries and Wetland Ecosystem Services” was organized by Government High School, Pissurlem, Sattari, Goa in association with ICAR–CCARI, Goa, on 2 February 2026. The programme was coordinated by Shri Nanda Majik, Assistant Teacher, who welcomed and introduced the guests and participants. Shri Devanand Parab, Sarpanch of Village Panchayat Pissurlem, attended as the Chief Guest and emphasized the important role of village panchayats in conserving biodiversity, wetlands, and fisheries. A special feature of the event was the release of student-prepared wallpapers on wetlands. The resource person, Dr. Sreekanth G. B., Senior Scientist (Fisheries), ICAR–CCARI, Goa, delivered an expert lecture highlighting the ecological and economic significance of wetland ecosystems, fisheries, and invasive fish species, covering key aspects such as ecosystem services, stakeholder involvement, evaluation methods, and management strategies. The workshop was attended by 147 participants, including 127 students and 20 teachers (97 males and 50 females), with representation from 28 ST and 9 SC participants, who appreciated the insights gained and expressed their commitment to wetland conservation, while the event encouraged the school to organize similar programmes in the future to promote ecosystem awareness and sustainable management.
