Strengthening Climate-Resilient Agriculture: ICAR–CCARI Trains 59 Officers from Odisha under OIIPCRA
The ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Old Goa, successfully organised and conducted three batches of a six-day residential training programme for officers of the Odisha Integrated Irrigation Project for Climate Resilient Agriculture (OIIPCRA), sponsored by the Government of Odisha. The training, entitled “Advances in Climate Smart Technologies for Capacity Building in Agro-Ecosystem, Resource Economics and Rural Enterprise Development”, was conducted for Group A and Group B officers of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Directorate of Agriculture & Food Production, Government of Odisha.
The three batches were held from 21–26 September, 5–10 October and 26–31 October 2026, respectively, with 20 nominated officers in each batch. A total of 59 officers participated, representing 24 districts of Odisha, including seven coastal districts. The participants comprised 31 Group A and 28 Group B officers, including 34 male and 25 female officers. The programme provided an important platform for professional interaction and exchange of experiences between agricultural officers from Odisha and scientists and technical experts of ICAR–CCARI, Goa.
The training covered a wide range of climate-smart and sustainable agricultural technologies, with emphasis on their practical application in coastal and climate-vulnerable agro-ecosystems. The programme included expert lectures, interactive technical sessions, field visits, live demonstrations and interactions with scientists. Major areas covered included integrated farming systems, soil and water conservation, water-use efficiency, agroforestry, organic and sustainable farming practices, horticulture, crop improvement, livestock conservation and improvement, resource economics, agro-ecotourism, agribusiness and rural entrepreneurship. The participants also gained practical exposure to location-specific technologies and successful agricultural models developed and demonstrated at ICAR–CCARI.
The valedictory function of the third batch was graced by Shri Sadanand Shet Tanawade, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Goa, who distributed certificates to the participants. In his address, he urged the officers to effectively implement the knowledge and technologies acquired during the training for the benefit of farmers in Odisha. He also emphasised the importance of translating agricultural knowledge into field-level outcomes and contributing towards the national vision of Viksit Bharat.
The programme received highly encouraging feedback from the participants, reflecting its relevance and practical value. The initiative is expected to further strengthen institutional cooperation between the two coastal states, Goa and Odisha, and create opportunities for future capacity-building programmes, technical collaboration and exchange of agricultural expertise. It also opens avenues for stronger linkages and local institutional support for future programmes along India's eastern coast.
Under the leadership and guidance of Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR–CCARI, these trainings for three batches were planned and coordinated by Dr. Shripad Bhat, Dr. Vinod A. Ubarhande, Dr. Nibedita Nayak and Dr. Theivanai M., with the support of the technical associates Shri Rahul Kulkarni, Smt. Pranjali Wadekar, Shri Vishwajeet Prajapati, Shri Datta Velip and Ms. Anuja Shinde. The successful completion of the programme was made possible through the collective efforts of the resource persons, scientists, technical and administrative staff, skilled support staff and contractual workers of the Institute.
