Area of Specialization / Research interests

  • Phenotyping for salinity tolerance in rice in natural field conditions (coastal salinity) and in artificial micro-plots.

  • Breeding for salinity tolerance in rice.

  • Conservation and characterization of rice germplasm from west coast region

Significant Contibutions:

  • Registered rice landrace “Korgut” (INGR No. 14055 and IC No. IC0599689)  with NBPGR as ‘genetic stock’ for ‘tolerance to salinity stress at seedling stage’.

  • Development and release of two salinity tolerant rice varieties Goa dhan-1 (KS-12) and Goa dhan-2 (KS-17) in 2017 by SVRC, Goa state.

  • Involved in the development and release of cowpea variety Goa cowpea-3 in 2015 by SVRC, Goa state.

Current focus:

  • Collection, conservation and characterization of rice germplasm of western region of India.

  • Evaluation and identification of suitable rice varieties for different rice ecosystems in Goa.

  • Development of suitable rice varieties for coastal Saline areas through conventional and marker assisted breeding.

  • Collection, evaluation and identification of suitable Cowpea lines for cultivation under residual moisture conditions in rice fallows of Coastal areas.

Outreach and extension

Front Line Demonstrations: Involved in conducting varietal demonstrations of improved cultivars of rice in farmers field.

Tribal Sub-Plan:   Involved in the project ‘Enhancing rice production and productivity in the tribal areas of Goa’  by way of supplying quality seeds of improved varieties, and through recommending proper cultivation practices.
