Field visit to multi-species fish farm at Dakshina Kannada, coastal Karnataka
A field visit was organized in Mulki, Dakshina Kannada coastal district, Karnataka, on 14 March 2025. Dr. Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (FRM), commended the farmers for their dedication to enhancing fisheries resources through cage culture, crab culture, and mussel culture. During the interaction, the farmers shared insights into their current farming status and challenges. They highlighted three key issues:
Mussel culture is facing seed drop due to high temperatures.
The market rate for seabass raised in cages is declining due to increased fish supply from neighbouring states.
There is a shortage of crabs for fattening and farming activities.
Dr. Sreekanth informed the farmers that the institute has already initiated efforts to connect them with traders in Udupi, Uttara Kannada, and Goa for fish marketing and seed supply. He assured them that these efforts would continue to ensure an adequate seed supply and better prices for cultured fish and shellfish.
Additionally, he provided specific recommendations:
Using shading techniques for mussel culture units.
Keeping mussel ropes at least 30-40 cm below the surface to improve survival rates.
Implementing seed traps to collect alternative fish species for cage culture.
To enhance livelihood opportunities, the farmers were also encouraged to explore poultry, duck, and goat farming. Shri Hemraj, a progressive fish farmer from Mulki, delivered the vote of thanks and assured continued technical and maintenance support for the farming activities. The program was coordinated by Dr. Sreekanth GB and Dr. Trivesh Mayekar, Scientist (Fish Genetics and Breeding).
