Field-day cum farmer-student-scientist interface at multi-species fish farm in Kerala
A field day cum was farmer-student-scientist interface was organised at the multi-species coastal fish farm in Kavvayi estuary at Thrikkaripur, Kasaragod coastal district, Kerala in association with College of Fisheries (CoF), Payyannur under SCSP on 15 March 2025. The field day was arranged in two fish farms in Kavvayi estuary; Multi-species fish farms of 1) Shri Shibin, who operates cage culture, pen culture, crab, mussel and oyster farming and 2) Shri Pavithran, who operates crab, mussel and oyster farming. A total of fifteen BFSc. students (8 female) from CoF, Payyannur along with two assistant professors from College of Fisheries participated in the field day programme. The students were given hands on training on crab farming, crab seed collection, cage culture, pen culture, mussel culture and harvest and oyster farming. The students were trained in the process of collecting the mussel ropes, removing the individual mussels, traditional sorting practices, grading and packing. The crab fattening systems and HDPE barrels were demonstrated to the students including feeding and handling the crab. Dr Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (FRM), ICAR-CCARI, Dr. Dona P, and Ms. Arya P, assistant professors from College of Fisheries, Payyannur, and Mr. Arun Das from Stem Systems Pvt. Ltd.. an Incubatee of CCARI co-ordinated the programme.
