Fisheries field day and fish harvest programme at Brahmavara, coastal Karnataka
A Fisheries Field Day cum Fish Harvest Programme was organized by ICAR-CCARI, Goa in collaboration with ICAR-KVK, Brahmavara, Udupi, on 15 June 2025 at the freshwater fish farm of the progressive farmer Shri Mahesh Hebbar in Brahmavara. The farm engages in the culture of diverse fish species including seabass, tilapia, pacu, bhasa, murrel, Indian major carps, silver carp, and common carp, in both silpaulin-lined and earthen ponds.
Dr. Sadananda Acharya, Scientist (Fisheries), ICAR-KVK, Brahmavara, underlined the significance of freshwater aquaculture in enhancing fish production in coastal areas, especially in light of the growing challenges faced in estuarine and marine fisheries. Dr. Sreekanth G. B., Senior Scientist (FRM), ICAR-CCARI, emphasized the benefits of polyculture systems in freshwater ponds to boost productivity, diversify aquaculture practices, and improve farm profitability.
A partial harvest of around 250 kg of fish was conducted during the programme, with the fish marketed live to local consumers. Shri Ravi Kharvi, a nationally recognized award-winning fish farmer from Kundapura, also participated in the event. The programme was attended by about 20 stakeholders including farmers, fishermen, and local residents and buyers.
